Printing from Your Computer to AU Printers
Ashland University students can print directly from their computers to several campus printers. Here are the basics to get you started:
- You get 400 “clicks” per semester included in your tuition before you need to pay extra, and unused clicks roll over to the next semester. A click equals one side of a black and white sheet. If you want color, you get charged two clicks.
- You begin by going to this address to download a program to your computer and install it: http://PS3.ad.ashland.edu:9163/setup. If you get an option for which printer to install, go for Find Me Printing - Students [PS3].
- Note 1: You can’t do this off-campus. You must be on the campus Wi-Fi network.
- Note 2: This website can detect whether you are using a Mac or a Windows machine and adjust itself, but if you have trouble you can take your computer to the walk-up IT desk on the main floor of the library.
- Note 3: Chromebooks have had special trouble with this software in the past. My best advice if you have trouble is to go to the IT help desk in the library.
- The general idea, after everything is installed and working, is that you do the usual procedure to print a file and specify Find Me Printing - Students [PS3] as your printer. Your file gets saved to a server, but it doesn’t print yet. Then you walk up to one of the printers listed on this handout and use your EagleCard to start the print job. (It will hold four hours for you before it gets deleted.)
- The first time you do this, you will need to tell the printer your username and password, but after that, the system should remember you.
- You would be wise to go through this whole procedure a few days before the first time you really need a printed copy. You would also be wise, after going through the whole setup procedure, to print out a test page, and if there is any problem, go to the IT department help desk in the library.
A bit of advice
Some students wait until the very last second to print things. If they need paper copies for a peer editing session in Bixler at 9:00, they assume they can race into the library at 8:55 and get the job done. That’s not very smart. For one thing, if you do that, you will be behind ten other people who are just as disorganized as you are. For another, the username/password process for the first time takes several minutes. And finally (this is more common than you might think) if the printer is out of paper or ink, you will need to dig up an IT person and wait for them to find the supplies and load them. With luck, you will walk up to our door at 9:20, long after the door has been locked and you have been marked absent for the day.
Be smart. Plan on doing the printing you need at least a couple of hours before the absolute deadline.
