Choose one of the essays above and write a four-page essay which analyzes the rhetoric—the way the piece is written and the choices made by the author.


Both of these authors are, in a sense, "outsiders" (and, to tell the truth, so were Douglass and Anzaldúa from the first essay assignment), so your first task as you read is to attempt to get inside their experience, or at least to let them tell their whole tale. Both are plain-spoken and neither fits too well into our conventional stereotype of a "proper author." That's OK. Let them speak before you respond.
